Inside out

The neck of the Gryffindor T-shirt was a little wide on me, so figuring it would gape on Mom, I slit the binding and slid some soft elastic around. But I didn't have the right color gray for the closure, and it showed. So then I cut off the hem of an old T-shirt and turned it inside out to make piping cord for a pink bow to hide the hole. Right as it occurred to me I could do that, I had a flash of memory — Mom showing me how to stitch and turn cording, and how long it took and how loudly I whined about it. But it was like a miracle at the end. She had a thin metal tool with a carabiner-style hook on the end for turning the piping right side out.
